Celebrating success: idoba is proud to be part of award-winning Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2019

How vital is water conservation for Western Australia? Last week, at the 2024 Australian Water Awards, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Water Corporation won the Organisational Excellence Award for their long-running Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2019. idoba has been a proud contributor to the project from the beginning.

In the 1970s, Western Australia had 420 billion litres of water flowing into its dams each year. Today, it has just 25 billion litres.

Faced with such climate change and population growth challenges, Western Australia’s Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Water Corporation set out to transform the way it thought about urban water use.

In 2018, they launched the Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2019, the first of a series of successive, long-run plans to transition Perth to being a world-leading, waterwise city by 2030.

idoba (then known as Optika Solutions) was at the heart of the project providing our data science expertise to the project’s H2OME study, Water Corporation’s largest ever residential water-use study. H2OME incorporated the technology, data and approach to determine how much water Perth should be using to “preserve the liveability, amenity and quality of life of the community.”

From the beginning, idoba has interpreted data, applied machine learning and provided analytical support to enable the Waterwise Perth plan in delivering some remarkable results for its citizens:

  • Over 1.9 billion litres of water saved

  • 26% improvement in urban water management performance

  • 100% of Perth’s metro local governments endorsed as Waterwise Councils.

In 2019, at the Australian Information Industry Association’s prestigious iAwards, Water Corporation and idoba/Optika won Data Insights Innovation of the Year for H2OME.

Alongside the Waterwise Perth project, we have also applied our water expertise to the mining sector, helping leading mine operators with dewatering projects. Our modelling approach helps operators map and model all the drivers of water level for their specific mine site and bore field, enabling them to respond instantly to changing conditions, ensuring the optimal balance of productivity, safety and cost while minimising environmental impact.

Now the Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2019 has been recognised again with the Australian Water Awards’ Organisational Excellence Award.

A Waterwise Perth is cool, liveable, green and sustainable – a place where people want to live, work and spend their time.” idoba is proud to provide our data analytics talent to achieving this vision for our home city.
